Use Mindfulness to Become Aware

Mindfulness is simply being fully aware of your present moment. This means you are aware of feelings, thoughts, and sensations. Mindfulness is the state of being very calm, relaxed, and focused. You can lead a more relaxing and stress free life by learning to quiet your mind. Not only is important to use mindfulness to become aware, but practicing mindfulness will also keep you more grounded as you exist solely in the moment.

Bring mindfulness into your everyday life:

1. Do one thing at a time. Multitasking is a definite no-no when trying to achieve mindfulness. By doing one thing at a time, you are giving your full attention to the task at hand. You will make fewer mistakes simply due to your new attention span.

2. Do each thing slowly and with purpose. By taking your time on each task, you are able to fully focus and take everything in. This level of awareness allows you to examine each action. This may also open your mind to doing things a little differently.

3. Do less. Why are you so busy? What is needed? How can you simplify? Take a day, and simply do less. Soon you will see what you can live without to simplify your life.

4. Create space between things. This can be time as you create space between appointments. This can also be physical space. Is it time to de-clutter your living space to allow energy to freely flow around you?

5. Practice a relaxation response twice a day. A relaxation response could be a moment of prayer, a time to breathe in an essential oil, yoga stretches, or deep breathing. Twice a day and these moments of relaxation can be very impactful.

6. Be PRESENT when you speak to someone. This is focusing on the very person you are communicating with. Focus on them, not your phone. Focus on how they say their words. Focus on their eyes, or voice inflections. If it is just a cashier at the grocery store, focus on them in the moment, and call them by name.

7. Eat slowly and savor food. By focusing on each bite of food you will savor the moment. The texture, taste, smells can help you build a memorable moment and relax.

8. Fully accept the moment you are in. This very moment as you read these words accept this moment. Focus on the environment, the sensations, and the thoughts coming into your head. Fully accept this moment and know that everything works together for the good.

With some practice, you will be able to achieve mindfulness every day. It  may seem like a daunting task, but the more you practice these 8 steps, the more habitual they will come. If it’s easier, just start with one and practice it for 21 days (This is the amount of time it takes for something to become a habit). Then move on to the next one. Pretty soon you will feel the transformation and the power of mindfulness in every moment.
